What is the Federation of North-American Explorers?

Eurojam-4The Federation of North-American Explorers (FNE) is a member organization of the Union Internationale des Guides et Scouts d’Europe – Fédération du Scoutisme Européen (UIGSE-FSE). The FNE incorporates groups from Canada and the United States into the international UIGSE-FSE organization. These are all entirely volunteer-run organizations that provide a comprehensive outdoor program designed to assist youth in their mental, physical, spiritual and moral formation. It is our hope that these youth will become no less than saints. Here are some interesting facts about the FNE and UIGSE-FSE:

  • The FNE was started in Toronto, Ontario in 1999 and now has three active groups with as many as 15 more starting this year.
  • The UIGSE-FSE comprises 20 countries with some 56,000 members.
  • The UIGSE-FSE was started in 1956 and can trace its origins before then to Venerable Father Jacques Sevin, who is considered the “Father of Catholic Scouting.”
  • The UIGSE-FSE has been recognized by the Holy See as a “Lay Association of the Faithful of Pontifical Right” in 2003.
  • This is a proven program that has produced many vocations. In France, 80% of vocations to the priesthood come from the FSE. There are also several bishops in Europe that belong to the FSE brotherhood.

Who can join?

Stella Maris FNE is for boys ages six to sixteen years old. Ages six and seven belong to the Otter Lodge. Ages eight to twelve belong to the Timber Wolf Den. Ages twelve and a half to sixteen belong to the Explorer Troop.

Can girls join? Can mothers help?

The FNE movement has an established program and methodology for girls in FNE groups. However, sections for girls are not available in the South Florida Stella Maris FNE at this time. Such a program could be created if the demand for it exists and if enough adult female volunteers answer the call to lead these programs. We would not be ready to start a girls program until September 2014 at the earliest. Please let us know if you would like to see programs for girls or if you would like to volunteer.

What do you believe?

We are Catholic. We accept the Magisterium in its entirety, and we are in full communion with Pope Francis and the Catholic Church founded by Christ and His Apostles.

Can non-Catholics participate?

Christian youth who, together with their parents, are supportive of the Catholic nature of the program delivered by FNE can join Stella Maris FNE. This program includes Catholic elements such as praying the Rosary, the veneration of saints, and offering the Sacrifice of the Mass. Youth and families who profess non-Christian beliefs cannot be admitted as members out of respect for their beliefs and religious practices because our program acknowledges Jesus Christ as savior and that we are children of the Holy Trinity.

When and where do you meet?

We meet every other Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the Parish Hall of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Click here for directions.

How often do you go camping?

26We will have four camping trips per year as well as other events and excursions. Details will be announced and posted on our online calendar as they become available.

How much does it cost?

The cost to join Stella Maris FNE has not yet been determined. However, we will do our best to keep the cost to a minimum.

Do you have a uniform, handbook, badges, etc?

The FNE has an established and proven pedagogical method that incorporates the use of handbooks, badges, uniforms, symbols and many activities that bring these all together. These materials are all provided to our youth as part of their membership fee.

Are you affiliated to any other youth programs?

We are a member group of the Federation of North American Explorers. We are not affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, WOSM, WAGGGS, the Girl Scouts of the USA, or any other similar youth group.

Can ranks and badges from other youth organizations be transferred to the FNE program?

Ranks from other youth organizations cannot be transferred. Progression through the FNE program incorporates not only the development of different skills, but more importantly considers each individual’s spiritual and moral progress in ways that are not incorporated in other programs.
